Today The Tory Burch Foundation launched its “Embrace Ambition” campaign. The campaign encourages women everywhere to “fearlessly pursue your dreams and embrace your ambitions”. It advocates for women to be strong. To be empowered and to empower other women. To dream big, not to let fear hold you back and, importantly, that ambition is not a dirty word. The campaign has a compelling video that is a must watch and share – share with your friends, family, children, colleagues — multiple times!

To say that the video and campaign inspired me would be an understatement. And yes, I have been told at varying times during my career that I am too driven, ambitious or outspoken. Qualities while seen as strengths for our male colleagues, a criticism for women. Not surprising to those who know me, not only did I learn to ignore the comments, as I matured I would tell those who mentioned it in a negative way, that those attributes were necessary, for a man or a woman, to be a successful leader. On reflection, these statements tested my commitment, my resilience and made me stronger. I can unequivocally say that I embraced my ambition, my passion and my desire to inspire the people who surround me to live their best lives, dream big and make a difference in all that we do each and every day.

Today, I am proud to be the President of Dart Real Estate, a company that creates places where we can live meaningful lives. Although real estate and development are industries that have been traditionally male dominated, not so for Dart Real Estate and our other Dart Cayman companies. We embrace diversity and meritocracy, have a balanced workforce with a significant number of exceptional women and men who are senior executives and leaders. We certainly embrace ambition – no judgment.

Thank you Tory Burch for such a meaningful and impactful campaign. Now I ask all of you…. what’s your ambition?

The Pledge

I will:
Embrace ambition.
Proudly articulate my ambition. Not hide it.
Defend women who are criticized for being ambitious.
Dream big. Not justify my dreams.
