It’s always a welcome event when a stunning new hotel arrives in the Caribbean. Kimpton’s Seafire Resort + Spa is a terrific addition to the super-swank Seven Mile Beach on Grand Cayman. The property is set 24 feet above sea level, which provides an airy vibe and outstanding sunset views. With décor that combines authentic Caribbean charm and a sleek modern beach vibe, endless on-site activities, and multiple dining options, the property has something for everyone.
Beach lovers will adore the perfect sand beach that is just steps from the hotel and which is presided over by a super friendly staff that sets up beach chairs and umbrellas in an instant. (No need to “save” a chair at this resort.) Simply lounging is the perfect way to spend the day. However, the Seafire also offers multiple on-site water activities, most of them free. The kayak fleet gives guests an outstanding view of the Caribbean Sea; instructors are on hand to teach water lovers how to navigate in the property’s Hobe Cat sailboats; those who love speed, can jump on a jet ski; paddle boarding is extremely popular and there are also a couple of water tricycles, plenty of snorkel gear and giant floating beds.
Those who want to experience the ultimate in relaxation, should head over to the spa for one of the Caribbean’s most indulgent spa experiences. The 8,500 square foot spa is inspired by the island’s lush forests and stunning reefs and the hamman is tiled in perfect blue stones that recall the clear waters that surround the Cayman Islands. Most of the products used are organic and locally sourced. Marine minerals are used in the Vitamin Sea facial and a quartz sand therapy massage uses local sand to relieve muscle aches and induce deep relaxation. While there, I tried the glorious two hour Hamman Purification Journey, a blissful treatment that incorporates volcanic ash, essential oils and a massage that results in the most perfect Hamman treatment ever.
Too many beach hotels suffer from mediocre or snore-inducing food. The Seafire breaks the mold with outstanding cuisine and more than enough choices. For fresh, local seafood and veggies coupled with a Mediterranean twist, try Ave. The handmade cocktails feature local exotic fruits and are both delicious and potent. Nestled inside Ave is Avecita, a dinner-only venue the showcases Spanish tapas. The Chef’s Bar seats only nine lucky guests who get to watch their food being prepared; other foodies can join the fun at several nearby communal tables. Of course there is beachside dining. Visit Coccoloba, where Caribbean food is infused with a taste of Mexico, and tequila and tacos are on the menu, as well as creative salads and freshly caught fish.
